Cannabis law in New Zealand

Legal — medical use

New Zealand operates the Medicinal Cannabis Scheme, which allows patients to access quality-verified cannabis products through a prescription from a registered medical practitioner or nurse practitioner. Patients must consult with a doctor who will assess their medical history and determine if medicinal cannabis is an appropriate treatment option.

  • Medicinal cannabis is available only via prescription from a New Zealand-registered doctor or nurse practitioner.
  • All products must meet the government's Minimum Quality Standard (MQS) to be legally supplied.
  • Patients are prohibited from growing their own cannabis at home.
  • Recreational use of cannabis remains illegal in New Zealand.
  • Patients cannot import medicinal cannabis products themselves; this must be handled by authorized prescribers.
