Cannabis law in India
Limited accessIndia does not have a national medical cannabis programme for dispensing flower. Instead, patients may access licensed Ayurvedic, Siddha, and Unani (ASU) formulations containing cannabis leaf (known as Vijaya) through prescriptions issued by registered medical practitioners under the oversight of the Ministry of Ayush.
- Recreational use of cannabis flower (ganja) and resin (charas) is prohibited nationwide under the NDPS Act.
- Medical access is restricted to licensed, whole-plant Ayurvedic formulations (Vijaya) prescribed by registered practitioners.
- There is no national patient registry or dispensary system for cannabis flower.
- Cultivation is generally prohibited but may be permitted by state governments for specific medical, scientific, or industrial purposes under strict licensing.
- The Ministry of Ayush does not recognize 'cannabis experts' or 'hemp vaidyas' and advises patients to consult only registered medical practitioners.
