Cannabis law in Canada

Legal — adult and medical use

In Canada, cannabis is legal for both recreational and medical purposes under the Cannabis Act. Patients with a medical need can obtain authorization from a healthcare practitioner to access cannabis through federally licensed sellers, or by registering with Health Canada to produce a limited amount for their own medical use or designating someone to produce it for them.

  • Patients must obtain a medical document from a healthcare practitioner to access the medical stream.
  • Access is provided via federally licensed sellers or through personal/designated production registration.
  • Adults of legal age may also purchase cannabis for non-medical use from provincially authorized retailers.
  • Personal production for medical purposes requires specific registration with Health Canada.
  • Importing or exporting cannabis for personal medical use is prohibited.
